It was announced at the BSHA AGM in November 2008 that Maxi Cobs were to have their own qualifiers for this year’s Longines Royal International Horse Show (July 22-26). The class, increasing in popularity, is for cobs exceeding 155cms, to be judged as Cobs:

“The Cob is a type rather than a breed. A short-legged animal, it has bone and substance with quality and is capable of carrying a substantial weight. The Cob should be well mannered and ideal for nervous or elderly riders. Cobs should have sensible heads, (sometimes roman nosed), a full generous eye, shapely neck crested on the top, with a hogged mane and well defined wither. The Cob should also have clean, strong hocks and all the attributes of a good hunter; low movement and a comfortable ride.” BSHA 2009 Rule Book

A popular decision amongst the cob enthusiasts, and it will be interesting to see these classes be well represented at the RIHS. Additionally, Maxi Cob winners at shows holding RIHS qualifiers will be eligible for the open cob championship, which is typically restricted to the winner and second placed in the Lightweight and Heavyweight categories.

"Many people buy or breed cobs which although of show quality then grow above the maximum height for cobs of 15.lhh," said Hickstead's show director Roger Stack.

"This will get them on to the show circuit and offer the chance to compete at the Royal International, which is the ambition of most people interested in showing."
